Jill Corey and Don Hoak

Jill Corey was a prominent traditional pop singer of the mid-50s, known for her rich tone and emotional delivery at a time when orchestral ballads dominated the charts. Rising to fame as a teenager, she became one of the youngest stars of the era, appearing frequently on television and building a strong recording career. Her signature hit, “Love Me to Pieces,” captured the dramatic, romantic style of the decade.

Beyond her music, Corey’s life was also shaped by her marriage to Don Hoak, a Major League Baseball third baseman best known for his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates, including their 1960 World Series championship season. The couple married in December 1961, linking two rising public figures from very different worlds—popular music and professional sports. Their story, however, was marked by tragedy when Hoak died suddenly of a heart attack in 1969 at the age of forty-one. Corey largely stepped away from the spotlight in later years, but she is still remembered for “Love Me to Pieces” and her place among the notable voices of pre-rock American pop.
