Born in Racine, Wisconsin, in November 1948, she displayed an early talent for music, mastering the piano at a young age. However, it wasn’t until she embarked on a solo career that music executives and music fans began to take note of her talent.

Her debut single with its infectious rhythm and soulful lyrics catapulted the singer/songwriter to fame virtually overnight. The song showcased her dynamic voice and unparalleled piano prowess, earning her critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base. With the success of her debut album of the same name, she seemed poised for stardom.
Despite her initial success, she struggled to replicate the triumph of her breakout single that went to #17 on Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the charts for thirteen weeks. While subsequent albums showcased her undeniable talent and versatility, they failed to capture the same magic that had made her debut such a sensation.
Despite her commercial struggles, she continued to pursue her passion for music, releasing several albums throughout the 70s and beyond. While these later works may not have achieved the same level of commercial success, they showcased her evolution as an artist and her commitment to her craft. Via a publicist, she was quoted as saying, “Listen to my lyrics—my songs tell more about me than anything I could ever say.”
During the 70s and 80s in America, she was once dubbed “The First Lady of Rock”; and in Europe, she was once given the title “Queen of Rock” and was also voted “Top Female Artist” for two consecutive years and held the #1 position in the “Music Express Popularity” poll.
Today, Chi Coltrane remains a respected figure in the music industry, admired for her pioneering spirit and enduring talent. Her performances continue to resonate with audiences around the world.
Rolling Stone magazine described Coltrane as a “rip-snorting female vocalist/composer/producer whose performances are nothing less than searing.”
Coltrane’s powerful vocals and mesmerizing piano skills are akin to those of the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis who is often associated with “Thunder And Lightning.”
