Aired on Treasure Island Oldies –Mar 15, 2026
Way before there was Treasure Island and its Oldies, there was the Treasure House, home of Captain Kangaroo.
The Captain Kangaroo show was an American children’s television series that aired weekday mornings on the CBS for 29 years, from 1955 to 1984, making it the longest-running children’s program on a commercial network.
In the late 50s and early 60s, Captain Kangaroo featured the popular five-minute cartoon segment, Tom Terrific. Tom was a boy hero who lived in a treehouse and could morph into anything he wanted, thanks to his magical funnel-shaped “thinking cap.”. He also had a comic lazybones of a sidekick, Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog.
Oddly enough, in 1969, a Los Angeles-based rock band called Stonehenge decided to change its name to that of Tom Terrific’s arch-enemy.
*****
The name was chosen during a band brainstorming session upon the arrival of lead singer/guitarist, Michael Fennelly.
The band made the Top 40 in 1970, peaking at a respectable #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the charts for 14 weeks.
However, they had a lot more success north of the border, reaching the Top 10 on Toronto’s CHUM chart.
Unfortunately, this would be the only time they would chart and the group disbanded in 1972.
Far from being “rotten to the core,” the band, Crabby Appleton, were accomplished musicians. Like many of their contemporaries, if there was an opportunity to relive their “fifteen minutes of fame,” they would probably be most willing to “Go Back,” this week’s Tom Locke moment in time.

This “Moments In Time” story is yet another example of a “golden oldie” or forgotten favorite that earned its place in the evolution of Rock & Roll.
