In the early 50s one of the top female pop artists was Teresa Brewer who appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on several occasions.
Her first charted success was “Music! Music! Music!” which went to #1 on the Billboard pop charts in March of 1950.
A couple of years later, backed by the Ray Bloch Orchestra, she released a “Swing” style version of a song written by bandleader Milton Kellem. It went to #25 on the charts.
However, this song would go on to pass the test of time being recorded by numerous artist over the next 60+ years.
*****
In 1964 different arrangements of the song made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 – one by Tracey Day in a style that emulated Phil Specter’s Wall of Sound which was popular with girl groups at the time. It went to the #51 position.
The other 1964 hit was a crossover hit by Skeeter Davis that went to the #48 position on the Hot 100 and #8 on the Country charts.
In 1967 Trini Lopez chimed in with his version that made it to #67 on the pop charts.
Other artists who covered this record include Viola Willis in 1979 with her disco/dance version; Bad Manners in 1989 with a ska version; and, UB40’s single release from their 2010 “Labour Of Love IV” album.
Nevertheless, the most successful version of the song belongs to two sisters out of Los Angeles. Their recording went to #11 on the Billboard pop charts in 1956.
Thanks to their intimate harmony, their rendition is considered to be the benchmark version of the song even today.
The perfect follow up tune to “Tonight You Belong To Me,” here’s Patience & Prudence with “Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now,” this week’s Tom Locke moment in time.

This “Moments In Time” story is yet another example of a “golden oldie” or forgotten favorite that earned its place in the evolution of Rock & Roll.
