Aired on Treasure Island Oldies – May 11, 2025

Originally known as the Young Rascals, the Rascals’ initial notoriety came  from their energetic blue-eyed soul and rock hits, such as “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore,” “Good Lovin’,” and “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long.”

However, they were able to complement their repertoire with some poignant ballads, showcasing their growing maturity as songwriters and musicians.

Timing has often been referenced as being one of the key elements for records that became hits. Such was the case for a Rascals’ release in 1967, one that coincided with a time of transition for both the band and the broader musical landscape.

The song was a commercial success, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and marked a stylistic shift for the Rascals toward more sophisticated sound. It also reflected the era’s broader trend of artists experimenting beyond conventional Rock & Roll.

Written by band members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, the song is a delicate expression of emotional uncertainty in a romantic relationship. Cavaliere’s tender vocal performance conveys vulnerability, while the lyrics delve into the fear of commitment and the struggle to trust one’s feelings.

The themes of doubt and emotional conflict continue to resonate with teenagers today as they did in our day. And make no mistake, their mothers will continue to be there for them, providing support and guidance when asked “How Can I Be Sure,” this week’s Tom Locke moment in time.

This “Moments In Time” story is yet another example of a “golden oldie” or forgotten favorite that earned its place in the evolution of Rock & Roll.
